Why I don't Shop at Walmart

Can I vent? I don't usually do a whole lot of complaining or expressing my frustrations on my blog but how my day ended definitely needs to be noted for future reminders of why I don't shop at Walmart. I'm still shaken up about their horrible customer service. I don't know what it is, but everytime I enter into that store it's always a bad experience.

So, the reason for this adventure was to get a prescription. And Walmart happened to be the only store with the medicine we needed. My luck, of course. It was suppose to be an in-and-out trip. Get it and go. But no. Their pharmacy pick-up window told me I needed to go to the drop-off window for missing information. Next I know I'm at the drop-off window for about 30 minutes (no joke!) talking to the pharmacy lady who didn't seem to know what she was doing and kept repeating the same questions after questions about twenty times! During this time, the meltdowns happen. First it's Lucas. Screaming. He's tired; it's naptime. Then Jackson. He is hungry. Very, very hungry. Crying and crying until his little face was bright red. Then it's Stella. She is bored, and she has loudly made it known to me. A long line started to form behind me. People stood there in amazement as they listen to the bloody screaming of my children.

Finally I'm given the okay to leave the line, but have to wait another 20 minutes to pick up the medicine. If I leave the store, I know I'm not going to come back with three crying children. So, I head to the customer service area to nurse my screaming little baby. I bribe Stella and Lucas with a donut to quit their crying. As I start to plop down on the bench and relieve my baby's hunger pains I get barked at by one of Walmart's employees that I'm absolutely not allowed to nurse in public. She orders me to leave the bench and that I can only nurse in a bathroom stall...with my two other kids. And a disguising tiolet in my face. I was completely caught off guard. Told her I had a nursing cover and that no one would see. Not acceptable. I was shaking with anger, but my main focus was this screaming baby who needed me. So we all somehow fit in this bathroom stall and I feed Jackson. And I completely lost it along with Lucas and Stella. All three of us crying. It was horrible. But finally Jackson was happy.

I came from the bathroom and made a complaint. Talked to a manager and got an apology. But I'm still mad. Mad that I didn't stand up for myself or my child. Mad that nursing a child is looked down on. Mad that I got yelled at and practically banned from Walmart because I choose to breastfeed my child. I wouldn't be surprised if one day breastfeeding is banned from public property. It's just sad how some people preceive breastfeeding. So, that's my reason why I choose not to shop at Walmart. I know the prices are cheap. But it's not worth the headache.
Update: I found out that Connecticut (and most states) has a law to protect a mother's right for breastfeeding a child in public. I did write to Walmart's corporate office and received an apology. Also the head manager at that particular Walmart contacted me and apologize and addressed the employee who discriminated against me. She also said her other employees have been notify the right of a nursing mother. That's all I needed was an apology and public awareness. What I learned from this experience was that I need to be more vocal and stand up for my rights and beliefs.

Fancy Type

How cool and beautiful is this type from Keetra Dean Dixon? I love it.

Zumba

That's right. I've taken up Zumba a.k.a salsa dancing. And I love it. There's something about dancing your heart out while sweating but feeling sexy. And not caring that you look like a complete fool while trying to get the latin moves down (I'm still a beginner). Anyway, the number of times I've taken it I always think of Jennifer Beals in Flashdance. You know that first scene where she is dancing like crazy. That's awesome.

Inside Purl

Last Friday I had quite a fun day. I spent the morning and early afternoon soaking up rays and enjoying the first signs of summer at the beach with my kids and friends. Then I ran home took a shower then babysitter arrived, and I caught a train into the city. I had some errands to run and met up with my girlfriends Heidi and Katie. As I was walking through Soho, I was thinking to myself I can't believe I was just at the beach and now I'm surrounded by concrete. Anyway, one stop I made was to Purl. I love this fabric shop. Without fail, I always leave with new fabric and excitement to start sewing. I have a few projects that should complete Lucas and Stella's room.

Sweet Tooth

While I was in the city, I took note of two dessert stops in the West Village. The first one we actually ate at is called Sweet Revenge . It's a wine bar, but they have savory cupcakes that look like tulips because they are baked in parchment paper. The cupcake flavors are very decadent. I ordered one with peanut butter and buttercream frosting. Yum.

Another dessert stop is GROM. They are famous for their gelato. It's the real deal--old-fashion gelato made by an Italian company from Italy using Italian ingredients. Wish we had a chance to stop here, but the line was long. They are serious about their ice cream quality--producing their own fruit on their own farm. All organic.

New Read?

I need some references to some books I can read over the summer. Summer is the time I read. I know it's kind of pathetic that I read during season. But that usually when I find a little extra time. I'll looking for a read that immediately captures and holds the attention. And of course is REALLY good. I love to read, but often I get distracted. And many times I start a book, but never finish it. Or it takes me so long to complete. Any book suggestions?

Sixx Design Show

I excited to hear that Bravo is launching a show on the hip interior design couple, Cortney and Robert Novogratz and their six kids (not to mention that she is pregnant with her seventh). I love their style and how they transform space. And do you know that they live in Manhattan? With six children? Now that's a rarity.

Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! This year we've made the effort to teach Stella and Lucas about being kind to the earth. We've planted seeds. We've recycled. We went to the nature center and learned how to make kites and boats out of recycled items. We went hiking in one of the nature preserves. And when we go on walks around the neighborhood, we pick up trash (not one of my favorite things to do, but Stella insists). Oh, and I'm not allowed to kill any bugs or spiders in the house or else I will hear an ear full.

A Little Scoop

You might remember when I posted about this country wedding. I had the honor of designing all of the wedding party jewelry. Well, The Knot picked up the wedding story. Not surprising to me. It was beautiful. Nice that they mentioned DMJ.

Also, we've shipped internationally! It's exciting to seeing buyers from aboard purchase jewelry. The Nie Nie necklace has been quite the seller.

Cute idea for a children's birthday party.

Up and Running

My jewelry site is up and running again. Glad that hassle is over. Here are a few pieces I added. Perfectly dainty and short. Good gift for Mother's Day.

Can't Beat

You can't beat a day at the beach. I'm still thinking about how beautiful it was this weekend and of course today it's pouring outside.

Outlet Sale

Holy crap! Pottery Barn Outlet is having a 50% off sale on everything in their store this weekend only. And if you click here and print the link you can receive an additional 10% off your purchase. If you live in the area, there is a outlet store in Long Island near the Hamptons. It's going to be nice this weekend, so maybe head to the beach then do a little furniture shopping. It's not often that they do big sales like this.

Paper Constuctions

If you receive Real Simple, you might notice paper sculptures that appear every month in the magazine. They are created by the talented Matthew Sporzynski. These are images from Real Simple's behind scenes. It's amazing what you can make out of paper!

Fashion Plates

Remember Fashion Plates? My all-time favorite thing to do when I was a kid. Someone needs to bring them back. You might be able to score one on ebay.

Sorry for the Inconvenience

Some of you may have notice that my website is down. Sorry for the inconvenience. I've had a headache of technical difficulties, and I'm hoping that the problem will be resolved before the week ends. If there is a jewelry piece you are interested in or have questions, please email me at my personal account (since business email is down too): darleenmeier{at}hotmail.com.

Bunk Bed

The bunk bed arrived this past weekend. Lucas and Stella now officially share a room. This is good. I'm already seeing their relationship blossom. I choose a black bunk bed because it will eventually be the beds for Lucas and Jackson. In the meantime, we decided to keep the nursery as the nursery. And I've been changing Stella's pink bedroom to a more boy-friendly room. I still need to take down her pink curtains and pink chandelier.

Happy Tax Day

We just remember last night about filing our tax returns. Not good. Filing taxes is always a little painful. Making sure all the t's are crossed and i's are dotted. We are still going to have to file for an extension. I'm not looking forward to the post office today.

XXI

I'm blushing to say that I'm a regular shopper at Forever 21. And I've been running my mouth off to all my girlfriends asking them if they've stopped by to see the newly renovated store in our town. It's beautiful. Clean. Organized. Spread Out. Two-stories. New lines. It was eye candy. Thankfully I had my boys with me so I didn't too much damage.

Moroccan Poufs

Remember when I posted awhile back about wondering where I could get one of these Moroccan poufs that I saw in a J.Crew ad? Well, now I see them all over the place, and I'm still wanting to get one. I need to make a special trip into the city to visit the John Derian store, which has a large variety of colors. Also, Tazi Designs sells them at a cheaper price. But I'm not sure if the quality is the same.

Easter Sunday

We had a lovely Easter. Lots to be grateful and celebrate. New life. New beginnings. For the number of times it was told throughout the day, I think the kids finally got the Easter Story down by the end of the day. We were able to share Easter dinner with Ken and Kim and their kids. I made my lemon coconut cake again this year. Hope your Easter was just as enjoyable.

Spring!

It's finally arrived. I do have to say that I'm liking the rain. It means rain boot and rain jackets and green, green, green. I've missed all the color.

Sleeping Changes

Jackson now occupies the crib and has really taken a liking to the mobile. And Lucas is not very happy about this. But I keep telling him that his big boy bed is coming in the mail and will arrive anyday (he is currently sleeping on an air mattress in Stella's room). Jackson has outgrown the bassinett, and we really needed to reclaim our bedroom. Positive changes.

Easter Eggs

This past weekend we decorated Easter eggs. I blew out 18 eggs so we could make our egg garland. We used those eggs to make dutch babies and omelets for Sunday brunch. Stella was in charge of dying the eggs. Lucas was in charge of putting on the stickers. Then I strung the eggs with ribbon. And voila! It is now adorning our fireplace mirror.

Bookplates

I printed up some bookplates for Stella, so she can mark her favorite books. Maybe one day she will open up one her childhood books and smile when she sees her four-year-old handwritten name. Get these bookplates here.

Playing

Ahh...how great it is to be a baby. I've been telling friends how much I wish Jackson would stay a baby. It helps that he is such a good little one. When Stella was a baby I was so excited for all the milestones and was waiting in anticipation. When Lucas was a baby, I needed him to grow up and advance out of the baby stage for my own sanity. Now that I have Jackson, I just want him to stay put. Everyday I make an effort to enjoy all his baby-ness.

Class Visit

We attended Stella's preschool parent night today. Eventhough I go to her class everyday dropping off and picking up, it's not often that I hang around to see what new art project they are working on or what their daily schedule is or books they have been focusing on. So, I really enjoy parent night because that's when I get the scoop. Can you tell which one is Stella?
