Somehow this entire winter season my children have avoided the dreaded flu that everyone's been getting. I guess I didn't knock on wood fast enough because this past weekend, three of my children have been hit by some kind of nasty bug. Since I've been playing nurse, I thought I'd share with you where I get some of the natural remedies I use when my children are sick and the doctor can't help. I turned to using natural remedies a few years back when one of my children had a high fever that lasted for a week and the doctor told me all that I could do was alternate between Tylenol and ibuprofen. We just couldn't break it and high fevers are scary! I thought back to some of the natural remedies my mother did when I was sick as a child. That's when I started on my search to find other healing alternatives.
I'm by no means a master herbalist or a certified specialist in this field. An entire blog could be dedicated to just natural remedies and healing. But I am a mother, and I have four little children that get a large assortment of sicknesses. Through natural remedies we've beat strep, ear infections, croup, fevers, sore throat, pink eye, stomach flu, flu, colds, insect bites and even lice! I'm not against conventional medicine, but I always treat a sickness first naturally and then if my child is not getting better after a couple of days I take them into the doctor. I would suggest if you want to learn more about the benefits and how to properly use herbs or essential oils, take a class from a master herbalist or buy a book. Using herbs, foods and essential oils as medicine is a lost art, but there is definitely a reason why God gave us these items!
So below is just a list of items I use to treat and illness--varying on the illness and where you can get them.
Herbally Grounded. Herbally Grounded offers classes and has a wealth of knowledge on different tinctures and how to fight any kind of sickness. They sell natural remedy books too. I have also bought infection fighter from Vickie Sorensesen's Nature Works, who is a recommended master herbalist. And Angela Harris is very recommended master herbalist that I have learned a lot from and owns Herbally Grounded.
Essential Oils--I like to buy my essential oils from Doterra because they are 100% pure therapeutic grade, which means they will be more effective and aren't mixed with other oils. You can read about essential oils and their benefits here.
apple cider tonic. Daily consumption of RACV will prevent illnesses.
Distilled Water--keep a gallon of distilled water on hand so when you are making any treatments that require water it is clean from any impurities.
Emergen C packets--kids love them and its loaded with 250mg of vitamin C which helps to boost the immune system. I call it juice and mix with distilled water.
Cayenne--cayenne is another one of the seven healers of the world. You should pick up 40,000 heat units of cayenne, which is usually not in the spice section but in the vitamin section. Also get cayenne that is organic. Cayenne is an amazing healer! We have beat strep with it and I have a really great cough syrup recipe that I will post in future that calls for cayenne.
Ginger--another great food that has healing benefits. Tummy aches and coughs. Get fresh organic ginger root and store in the freezer. Or if you are like me you can get organic ginger powder.
Greens--green powder is basically a mixture of every kind of green vegetable and super foods. All the nutritional value is in it. And when a child is sick you definitely want to make sure their little bodies are being fed good nutrition. I mix a teaspoon in distilled water with Himalayan salt for my kids to sip on while they are sick and to keep them hydrated. You can also add to smoothies if your kids are weary of the taste. There are many kinds of greens on the market and you can get at Whole Foods. My sister and mom make our own greens from purchasing herbs and greens from Mountain Rose Herbs so we have a little more control of what we want in our powder.

Suckies--any mom knows that when a child is sick, comfort is also a key to healing. So I like to have on-hand ginger drops, Vitamin C lollipops, peppermint candies and cough drops.
Herbal Teas--peppermint and ginger tea for tummy aches. Sweetened with raw honey. For coughs and colds squeeze lemon and raw honey in warm water. Use distill water.
