Melting Crayons

The kids and I decided to make a Valentine craft last weekend. Since it was a last-minute craft, it needed to be a craft using existing items in the house. The decision was the good 'ol grade-schooler art craft: melting crayons.

We grabbed the crayon box and the kids pulled out crayons with Valentine colors. Next I pulled out the wax paper and pencil sharpener. We sharpened the crayons to create shavings. This was quite a process, but we got good piles of crayon shavings.
After we placed the shavings in between two layers of wax paper. Then we ironed the wax paper on a medium setting until the crayons were melted.
Then using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, we traced hearts and cut out the shapes. Then strung with thin ribbon. Hang the hearts against a window that gets good light. I love the stain-glass effect.

  1. I forgot about this craft! I was just thinking what decor craft I should make with the kids. This is a favorite and brings back great memories from kindergarten. Thanks!

  2. Wait! Do you leave the waxed paper on them? I'm stealing this idea right away.
